100 Greatest Public Golf Courses

Texas is home to some of the most famous private golf courses. The city of Hershey has three golf courses, one of which is located at a public facility. As far as the top golf courses are concerned, you will usually see the same courses named over and again. Every major Texas city has several top shelf public courses, while others are scattered across the state. The Lakes/Sunrise Course at Spanish Trail Golf Club is one of three courses at the club. The most expensive golf cart on the planet is so nice that it is not a golf cart.

The course was built in 1927 and is a classic layout with small greens and tight fairways. The layout boasts huge, rolling fairways and plenty of elevated tee shots. The parkland style course has a mix of typical lush, rolling fairways, fairly thick rough and quite a number of large bunkers protecting the fast greens. The front nine is laid out links-style while the back nine, due to its location inside a quarry, utilizes elevated tee boxes and greens. The course at Shadow Ridge boasts lush fairways and greens bordered by more than 2,000 trees and shrubs. Extended fairways are featured on the front nine, while mountainous terrain characterizes the back nine.

The opening hole is one of the toughest in all of golf. One of the most difficult holes is the par-4, 360-yard, third hole. Your round begins with a 603 yard, par 5, so pace yourself. Even for a good player, a 4-iron or 5-iron is needed to reach the green. The opening par 4 sets the stage for a memorable round and each hole thereafter adds to the enjoyment. The closing four holes are really solid, and the 18th hole is just a really good, demanding, but fair closer.

The course features four sets of tees for different skill levels. The course features two sets of tees, allowing the youngest beginners an opportunity to start off a little closer to the hole. The Arnold Palmer design, which opened in 1995, has five sets of tees to suit all levels of players. There are four sets of tees at the Mission Hills Resort course to satisfy every skill level. The 18-hole championship design offers five sets of tees, providing golfers of every skill level an unforgettable challenge. Built on an old quarry, Boulder Point offers three different nine hole experiences, all great.

The desert town is home to more than 80 golf courses. Despite what you may think, thats not a legitimate argument. The Pines course is the older of the two, and much the more challenging. The pace at Elma never gets too demanding, nor does it ever let up. The conditioning of the course is superb, as one would expect. Eagle Point and Diamond Creek are two of the most overrated golf courses in the counry.

The golf course is in great condition right throughout the year. Walton Heath Golf Club is where links golf meets inland golf. The big trees were left while the scrub was cleared. Renovated by the City of Tallahassee in 1999, the course provides both a difficult and scenic round for any golfer. The course will remind you of Dubs, but at half the cost. Nice Thompson designed courses and all but clearly not in the top 5.
